HIV becoming more prevalent

HIV becoming more prevalent

The latest figures on sexually transmitted infections in Australia show a major increase in the rates of syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the gay community.

The figures from the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research show there has also been an increase in the rate of HIV infections.

The centre's Professor John Kaldor says both biological factors and changes in behaviour are to blame.

"With HIV it's almost certainly something to do with behaviour change, and I guess increases in the level of unprotected sex," he said.

"With syphilis I think it's a little bit more mysterious. There are suggestions that the agent, the bug itself, may have changed in its infectiousness."
