When to start treatment

When to start treatment

Decisions on when to start treatment are made on an individual basis. This will take into account the health of your child and the way HIV is affecting his or her immune system.

It is recommended that a child should take HIV treatment if they are ill because of HIV.

It is also recommended that treatment should be started if there is a risk of HIV-related illness. Babies aged under one year should start HIV treatment immediately. Decisions on when to start treatment in children older than twelve months will depend on the strength of their immune system.

There’s some evidence that HIV treatment has very good results if it is used before a baby is five months old. This could be because HIV hasn’t yet had a chance to do permanent damage to the immune system.
