Empowering young people to protect themselves from HIV is one of UNAIDS’ priority areas. Young people aged 15 to 24 account for two out of every five new HIV infection globally. This means worldwide almost 3500 young people are infected with HIV every day. Most young people still do not have access to the information, skills, services or social support required to enable them to prevent HIV infection.
By putting young people’s leadership at the centre of national responses, providing rights-based sexual and reproductive health education and services and empowering young people to prevent sexual and other transmission of HIV infection among their peers; by ensuring access to HIV testing and prevention efforts with and for young people in the context of sexuality education; by ensuring enabling legal environments, education and employment opportunities to reduce vulnerability to HIV, young people can be empowered to protect themselves from HIV.
