Reducing sexual transmission of HIV is one of UNAIDS’ priority areas. Sexual transmission accounts for more than 80% of new HIV infections worldwide, but has been the most difficult mode of HIV transmission to address. A major revitalization of HIV prevention efforts focused on changing the norms, contexts and conditions which facilitate sexual transmission of HIV is required.
By promoting social norms and individual behaviours that result in sexual health; by supporting the leadership of people living with HIV for ‘positive health, dignity and prevention’; and by supporting universal access to key prevention commodities and services, especially for the most vulnerable, we can reduce sexual transmission of HIV.
