coordinated global response to HIV/AIDS

Canada Partners with the Global Donor Community

Canada is committed to a coordinated global response to HIV/AIDS. By working with partners and aligning with developing country governments, Canada is fighting HIV/AIDS in a harmonized way to reach those at risk more efficiently. Halting and reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 is one of the targets set by the Millennium Development Goals. Canada is a strong supporter of these goals and takes a comprehensive approach to fighting HIV/AIDS that recognizes the importance of promoting and protecting human rights. Between 2006 and 2009, CIDA provided over $650 million in funding to support the implementation of initiatives that respond effectively to HIV/AIDS in the developing world. CIDA maintains a number of large bilateral and regional programs in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, as well as multilateral initiatives that facilitate access to medicines for developing countries. CIDA also provides financial assistance to multilateral organizations and Canadian civil society in its efforts to fight HIV/AIDS internationally.
