Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

At the end of the year 2000, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization (WHO) have estimated that 36.1 million people were living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). AIDS, caused by HIV, is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that attacks the immune system and takes about five to ten years before killing its victim. Treatments for AIDS are drug cocktails, but they only slow the disease down. Drug cocktails have to be taken for the rest of your life and can cost an individual up to US$10,000 per year. AIDS was discovered in 1983, and has appeared to originate from chimpanzees. AIDS has existed for thousands of years in animals, it entered large human populations in the 1970s, and it seems that HIV/AIDS is not going away anytime soon.Botswana is estimated to have the highest rate of HIV infection in the world. This country is pa

The life expectancy is only about 37. They could also help Botswana to mass-produce generic drugs, which would bring the annual cost of treatment down to US$200. 78 years, it is estimated to decrease by 17 years by the year 2010 because of HIV/AIDS. Children are left to raise themselves, more than one in ten children have lost their mothers to AIDS. There needs to be more funds set up for poor countries that cannot afford treatment. For every one that dies of AIDS, another two fall sick. rt of Sub-Saharan Africa, home to about 70 percent of adults and 80 percent of children living with HIV or AIDS in the world. There are 12 women living with AIDS for every 10 infected men, and women in their early twenties are more likely to become infected than men. The worlds"tm wealthiest countries could easily help pay for treatment in Botswana. AIDS has crumpled Botswana society, the disease effects one third of the population. You cannot do that until you know about AIDS, which is alien to much of Botswana. Some even believe that it is witchcraft, they deny to believe it as a deadly disease. It is hard for Botswana people to afford the high prices they have to pay for necessary drugs, the drugs cost 20 times more than their average annual income. The public health spending of AIDS exceeds two percent of the gross domestic product. There has not been much in the way of research and development in Botswana.
