The test can reveal the presence of the HIV virus by identifying special antibodies that the human body produces when it comes in contact with the virus. This way of discovering the infection with the HIV virus is also used in traditional tests, but it takes a lot longer to allow the cells to show up. In the quick test procedure, the substance used to determine the existence of specific HIV antibodies, stimulates the HIV antibodies to be revealed a lot faster. The traditional technique would usually take for about 12 to 24 hours, while the instant HIV test takes 10 to 40 minutes to show an accurate result.

A negative result for a person that suspects the infection can make the difference between a free HIV life, and a positive result later. Suppressive medications that can be given to people who came in contact with the virus are given even if the quick test shows negative results.

The instant HIV test is also used for people that need a fast answer regarding this problem; however the test is still performed by a specialist.
