AIDS epidemic halted

AIDS epidemic halted

In November, उन AIDS, the United Nations program to fight HIV and AIDS around the world, made a blunt and transformative statement: the AIDS epidemic has been halted. “The world is beginning to reverse the spread of HIV,” the agency wrote. New infections are down 20 per cent over the past decade and the number of deaths has fallen by 20 per cent in the past five years. The progress is credited to education and advancements into the science halting the spread of the disease — 34 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, where the disease hit most hard, have stabilized or decreased the number of infections — and a 30 per cent increase in the number of people on antiretroviral treatments.

Keep an eye on: Giant strides in treating the disease may be changing the world’s perceptions of HIV/AIDS — the amount of money donated to fight the epidemic fell last year for the first time.
