Tasmania's AIDS and Hepatitis Council is worried about an alarming increase in HIV cases in the state.

In 2009 Tasmania had 14 newly diagnosed HIV cases , the highest number since 1994 and that is set to rise again this year.

The council's Kevin Marriott says there has been a jump in new infections.

"The figures are really quite concerning, the jump that we saw in 2009 is effectively looking like it could continue this year so it doesn't look like it's just a blip," he said.

"What we're talking about is the fact that HIV notifications are on the increase and that's consistent with the national picture as well."

Awareness of AIDS will be raised during tomorrow's World AIDS Day.
