US HIV figures a 'wake-up call'

US health authorities have acknowledged that they have substantially underestimated the number of new HIV infections in the country.

A new study from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows 40 per cent more people in America are becoming infected with HIV than experts previously thought.

The findings indicate that the HIV AIDS epidemic is and has been much worse than was once thought.

But the new figures do not mean that the epidemic in America is growing, just that researchers are able to provide more accurate estimates.

The CDC says better methods of measuring newly diagnosed infections have led to the new data.

But the head of the Centres' AIDS branch says that the research shows that the US has not been able to get a grip on the epidemic and warns that the figures serve as a wake-up call to all Americans.
