HIV cases rise in NT, other STIs stabilise

A new Northern Territory health report says HIV cases have risen while other sexually transmitted infections have dropped in the first half of 2009.

The Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Surveillance Update, which was released today, shows the rates of gonorrhoea and chlamydia have remained the same in the Territory at about 900 and 1200 cases respectively.

The number of syphilis cases has dropped by 39 per cent.

But there were 10 HIV cases reported in the first half of this year, compared with six at the same time last year.

Jamie Broadfoot from the health department says some of the people had travelled to countries where HIV is highly prevalant, but the majority had contracted HIV in the Territory.

He says NT Sexual Health will launch a traveller's campaign in partnership with the NT AIDS and Hepatitis Council early next year.
