Papua New Guinea has set itself the goal of stabilising the spread of HIV/AIDS in the next five years.

The disease is estimated to have claimed the lives of 11,000 people in PNG and infected 35,000 others.

World AIDS Day was chosen to launch the country's new HIV and AIDS strategy for the next five years.

It sets out ambitious targets that include restricting the spread of the disease to less than 1 per cent of the adult population.

The targets also seek to ensure 80 per cent of those infected receive treatment and 80 per cent of pregnant women get tested for the disease.

There is no shortage of plans and strategies in PNG but the challenge is implementing them.

The government recently committed $20 million to the fight against HIV/AIDS, the biggest ever budget allocation.
