A sustained rise in the number of Tasmanians with HIV has prompted warnings not to become complacent about the risks of unprotected sex.

The director of sexual health services, Maree O'Sullivan says there have been 14 new cases so far this year, and six of those were new infections among young men.

Last year there were 14 new cases, and six cases the year before.

In 2002 just three people were diagnosed with HIV.

Dr O'Sullivan says HIV does not discriminate and in the past two years new cases have also included women, young, old, heterosexual and homosexual people.

Dr O'Sullivan says new treatments for HIV improve the quality and length of life, but it is still a chronic illness with serious consequences.

She's urged people to always use condoms to avoid sexually transmitted diseases
