Local Miami celebrities today announce the organization of Renacer 2009, a fund raiser aimed at generating funds for Casa Renacer, a non-profit in Honduras serving underprivileged children infected with AIDS. The fund raiser, which is open to the public, will take place at Mia at Biscayne at 7pm on October 1, 2009 and will include the participation of Miami’s most recognized Central American celebrities including renowned anchor and journalist Neida Sandoval, Salvadoran singer Alvaron Torres, Honduran singer Miguel Angel Guerra and up and coming national reporter Maria Teresa Interiano.

“Currently there are thousands living with HIV and AIDS in Honduras and unfortunately a large percent age of them are young children residing in communities where education or medical attention are not available due to poverty and other economic factors”, states Neida Sandoval. “As a result, Casa Renacer has launched an initiative to give these children food and a place to stay; unfortunately, as a result of the crisis in our home country the foundation has run of out funds. We make a call to the Miami community to come and join us for this evening of entertainment in benefit of our dear friends in Honduras”.

Some facts about HIV/AIDS in Honduras:

- People with HIV or AIDS are thrown out of their household because they are infected.

- Men feel it is unmanly to use condoms therefore they have unprotected sex.

- The Catholic Church (a big influence in the country’s culture) teaches against protection during sexual intercourse.

- Certain political and religious organizations have in the past burned pamphlets with AIDS information as they were deemed to promote promiscuity.

“People living with HIV/AIDS in Honduras are discriminated by the community and their family. We at Casa Renacer want to help Hondurans with the disease, create awareness and let other know that without acknowledging the disease the epidemic we are experiencing in Honduras will continue to grow,” stated Sandra Zambrano, founder of Casa Renacer. “As of today, we are down to our last funds and appreciate all the help Miami can send us”.
