Kirby opens centre for human rights and health

A new centre named after former High Court judge Justice Michael Kirby will focus on how human rights affect health.

The Michael Kirby Centre for Public Health and Human Rights was opened in Melbourne last night by the head of UN-AIDS, Michel Sidibe.

Justice Kirby says the centre will have a particular interest on the impact of HIV/AIDS.

"It's going to be in part directed at the vulnerable communities in the frontline of the AIDS epidemic," he said.

"That means men who have sex with men, injecting drug workers, sex workers, refugees, and other groups of that kind who are very vulnerable to the HIV virus."
