More Queensland women worry about HIV acrobat

An increasing number of women are being referred to the Queensland AIDS unit amid concerns over the sexual activities of an Zimbabwean-born acrobat who is HIV positive.

Authorities issued a public alert earlier this week and 20 women have now contacted Queensland Health (QH).

Godfrey Zabouroni, 32, told police he had unprotected sex with at least 12 women in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, exposing them to HIV infection.

He was remanded in custody yesterday after appearing in a Gold Coast court on charges of grievous bodily harm and intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

QH says it is difficult to say how many women had unsafe sex with him.

It says while some will contact the QH phone line, others are expected to directly seek an AIDS test।

Queensland Health (QH) says 18 people have called a hotline in relation to an HIV positive man accused of deliberately infecting a woman.

Authorities have urged any women who have had unprotected sex with Godfrey Zaburoni, 32, to come forward.

QH chief medical officer Dr Jeannette Young says 14 people of the 18 who called a health hotline have been referred to the state's AIDS unit, after they raised concerns about their exposure.

"Some of them believing that they have had sexual relationships with him - other people were partners of people who have had sexual relationships," she said.

Zaburoni, who is a circus acrobat, faced a court the Gold Coast on Wednesday on charges of grievous bodily harm and intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.
