Acrobat HIV case sparks Qld Health plea

Sunshine Coast women who may have had unprotected sex with an African-born acrobat in 2008 are being urged to contact Queensland Health.

Police and health authorities are concerned a 31-year-old performer may have spread HIV to up to 12 women, including seven Queenslanders.

Acrobat Godfrey Zaburoni was a guest performer at the Coolum Kite Festival two years ago on the Sunshine Coast.

He was extradited from Sydney to the Gold Coast yesterday afternoon and is facing charges of grievous bodily harm and intending to cause grievous bodily harm or transmit serious disease.

The charges are in response to a complaint from a woman who has tested positive to HIV.

Queensland police say Zaburoni has given them details of 12 women with whom he has had unsafe sex.

Queensland Health is urging those women to seek testing for the virus.

Zaburoni is due to face Southport Magistrates Court later today.
