HIV and WHO

WHO is an acronym of World Health Organization. The main aim of the WHO is to provide support and assistance for improving the health conditions across the world. As HIV is a big threat to human beings, it is necessary to create an awareness regarding the disease. HIV and WHO are co-related terms. WHO has carried out campaigns for the awareness of the HIV all over the world. World health organization was founded in 1948 in United Nations. The intention behind the establishment of the organization is to provide support and assistance on international level for improving the health conditions. WHO has defined the heath as a state of complete mental, physical, and social well-being and not simply the absence of disease. The administrative office of WHO has been established at Geneva. The office is operated by three principle organs. An Executive Board of health specialists those are elected for three-year terms by the assembly, World Health Assembly, that meets yearly as the general policy-making body and a Secretariat that has offices from various regions and field staff across the world. The financial support is given by the government candidates who are the members of the organizations. Moreover, the finance is provided by the member countries as per their paying abilities.

The work of WHO can be divided into three categories that are given below:

Health Information

World Health Organization provides a central research services and clearinghouse. It prepared the codified set of sanitary regulations. The secretariat of WHO keeps the members of the WHO updated about recent progress in the use of vaccines, cancer research, health hazards of nuclear radiation and nutritional discoveries, control of drugclinical facilities for early diagnosis and prevention.

Disease control

WHO organizes the various campaigns regarding the health issues such as HIV/AIDS campaigns, creating the awareness about cancer, tuberculosis etc. as well as introduces vaccines programs, improving medical and clinical facilities.

Education and Consultation

WHO provides the technical advice and plans for controlling the diseases as per the requests of the member countries. It assists to set up the local health centers.

The work of WHO regarding HIV /AIDS

The HIV/AIDS program that has been started by WHO furnishes the evidence based support technical support to the members of WHO. The intention behind it is to help them to scale up the treatment for HIV as well as care and prevention services. WHO HIV/AIDS Programme staff work together with other UN Agencies, development agencies, Ministries of Health, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), health-care institutions, health services providers, people living with HIV, and other partners. The goal is to fortify all aspects of the health sector and provide the services to the members.

WHO has six regional offices. The organization provides technical support and develops the evidence based standard that will assist to change the decided goals into reality.

Current estimates show that the health sector alone signifies at least fifty five percent of the resources needed for the global response to HIV.

WHO HIV/AIDS Programme concentrates on five strategic directions

• Accelerate the scale-up of HIV treatment and care
• Exploit the health sector's contribution to HIV prevention
• Enable people to know their HIV status
• Provide in strategic information to better inform the HIV response
• Strengthen and expand health systems

The WHO HIV/AIDS Programme encourages a public health approach to HIV, treatment, prevention, care and support. The main goal of the WHO is to spread out the HIV related services across the world. As well as it brings the decided guidelines into the reality in order to follow the decided path. The WHO HIV/AIDS Programme is directly linked to other related programmes involving tuberculosis; blood safety; child drugs and medicines policy, sexual and reproductive health; and adolescent health, vaccine and microbicide development; gender and women's health, health education and substance dependence and disease surveillance; mental health
