China's Hu visits patients for World AIDS Day

China's Hu visits patients for World AIDS Day

Chinese President Hu Jintao has marked World AIDS Day by visiting patients in Beijing.

His Government has warned that stigma and discrimination are major obstacles in the fight against the disease.

It is estimated that some 700,000 people with HIV/AIDS live in China and the disease is now being openly discussed.

But activists say patients are still routinely being denied hospital treatment।

A member of parliament in Papua New Guinea is calling on his fellow politicians to better understand the threat HIV/AIDS poses to the country.

Papua New Guinea might have the highest prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in the South Pacific, but the Government recently cut funding in next year's budget to fight the virus.

Jamie Maxtone-Graham is in charge of the Government's response to the epidemic and is calling for greater awareness and a better understanding from his colleagues.

"I want to make it the number one priority of the Government because at the moment, there's no real grasp of this problem in terms of understanding [it]," he said.

AusAid says if the response against the virus is not stepped up by 2025, more than 70 per cent of all PNG hospital beds will be taken by HIV/AIDS patients.
