Kirby says some religions hamper safe sex message

Former High Court judge Michael Kirby says education is the key to protecting people from the spread of HIV.

He was speaking last night in Sydney at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, which helps people living with HIV.

The former justice called on governments to recognise the need to tackle HIV rates amongst marginalised communities.

Mr Kirby said some religions made the problem worse by opposing safe sex education.

"Religion ... it has to be said gets in the way in many countries to get the message over that the best way to bring down the epidemic proportions is to protect people who are at risk," he said.
