Obama to overturn ban on foreigners with HIV

Obama to overturn ban on foreigners with HIV

United States President Barack Obama has said he will overturn a 22-year-old law barring foreigners infected with HIV-AIDS from entering the country.

The ban, which has made it impossible for thousands of refugees, tourists and students to travel to the US, could be lifted by the beginning of next year.

Mr Obama said the old law was not based on reality and the change would help dispel prejudices about people living with the disease.

He said progress towards lifting the ban began last year, under the previous administration.

"Congress and President Bush began this process last year and they ought to be commended for it," he said.

"We are finishing the job. It's a step that will encourage people to get tested and get treatment. It's a step that will keep families together, and it's a step that will save lives."
