A Gold Coast court has heard details about the case of a circus acrobat who allegedly infected a woman with HIV in 2008.

African-born Godfrey Zaburoni, 32, was a circus acrobat touring Australia when police allege he infected the complainant, who cannot be named, with HIV.

He has been charged with grievous bodily harm and intending to cause grievous bodily harm or to transmit serious disease.

A friend of the woman cried as she told the Southport Magistrates Court how her friend had always wanted to have children.

She said her friend was devastated by the diagnosis.

The court also heard from a doctor who said he had given Zaburoni information on safe sex in 1998 so that he did not pass on the virus.

The woman at the centre of the case was also due to give evidence this afternoon in a closed court.

The committal hearing continues.
